The next clean up event for Keep Te Puke Beautiful (21 June) will be Number 10 that the voluntary group have hosted/taken part in since starting up in Feb 2025.
Spokesperson for the group Craig (Captain CleanUp) Wallace is proud of what the small team has achieved.
Picking up litter is not everyone’s idea of fun on a Sunday morning.
However, with initiatives like ‘ Captain CleanUp’ a Superhero/Litter Warrior, “Don’t Be A Tosser’ bumper stickers they hope to add some lightness and brightness to their mission.
We have had great support through Keep NZ Beautiful and its National Support Manager Wayne Gazley said ‘The Captain’.
Giving events quirky names like ‘No Butts Sunday’ – is also becoming a tradition. The group picked up cigarette butts discarded in gardens, footpaths and gutters in the Town Centre.
They are slowly but surely building a core group of volunteers who don’t mind getting their hands dirty (editor’s note – the group does provide gloves and grabbers so you don’t actually get your hands dirty – and hand sanitiser too!)
The next event ‘Can’t Get Sunday Out of My Mind’ (from the song covered by the group Chapta in the 1972 Loxene Golden Disc award) is on the 21 June.
You can check out all the details on the Keep Te Puke Beautiful Facebook page.
The group would love to see you there and have a coffee and a natter at Blackbird Records at the after event debrief.
